If the question is whether or not I would cash the $50 check, my answer is that I would. They voluntarily offered it to you, with no understanding of any obligation on your part. You are free to either cash it or return it.
If you're wondering about the "ethics" of keeping it, remember the real reason why they are sending you the $50 (which, by the way, is a drop in the ocean to them): They want you to tell other people that they "wowed" you. It's essentially a form of advertising. If you tell even one person about it, let alone several through a blog, then they've gotten their money's worth. BoA got what they wanted out of it. I hope you got what you wanted and cashed the check.

Tough question. I would be afraid of another gaff with customer service... either way! You could call and tell them and they would want the money back, big fuss, etc. or they could just brush it off.

I guess I would end up calling if it was worth my time.
